    We have been through multiple outages in the last 20 years here in West Ga. 2 years ago I invested in a larger 9500/12500 gen to run most of my house. With a friends help who is licensed electrician, we installed a dedicated backfeed breaker and interlock bracket to a 50 amp inlet on the side of the house. I also installed 2 amp meters inside at the breaker box to monitor the amp load on each of the 120 legs coming from the 50 amp outlet of the generator. I turn off most of the 240 breakers when running in emergency mode but can still run my AC when the weather is hot without overloading the gen with all my 120 breakers still on. I feel like we are set pretty well now. Trying to use non ethanol gas always, exercising the gen monthly for 30 minutes, and running out the gas completely from the carb with the fuel shutoff valve before storage back inside the garage. I also bought a gen tent to run the gen outside in bad wet weather to protect it from water damage. Great video!

    So I didn’t know that you could do this, so I’ll see why it’s really important to do this safely but I do something even different. What I do is I have a solar generator that is completely independent of all the wiring in my house so I charge my solar generator with another generator and then I run the stuff in my house off of that solar generator so of course it is impossible for it to backfeed into the electrical system in my house. So my solar generator will run 1500 W continuous with a 30,000 W peak so I can have a smaller gasoline generator to charge the solar generator so the solar generator will charge at 250 W continuous so as long as I don’t exceed that per hour, I would be good to go. so with that I can run my fridge freezer microwave toaster and washing machine but not everything at the same time and of course I can also run lamps so in a power outage I would be pretty good. I also have a potential of 1200 W of solar that I can use to charge up the battery’s during the day.

      I asked a lineman once about service loops, and that was when i learned that those big transformers aren’t necessarily the entire transformer. It’s probably just one of the coils likely housed inside of that white cylinder, where the other coil could be some distance away down the line. That’s an interesting demonstration with the generator! I would’ve been concerned about being put to sleep by the carbon monoxide exhaust choking out my clean air flow. THANK YOU for your time, service, and investment to demonstrate these very important lessons!!

    This is expert advice. However, the reason your average "Joe Moron" back-feeds into the power grid is: A) He knows just enough to be able to hook his generator up, but is too stupid to be extremely aware of what he is doing at all times. B) The price of the transfer switch install. It would seem to me that in this day and age, your average house should already be equipped with one from the time it is built. Just like a 220 dryer outlet. I guess the argument would be that not everyone would use it, but I have a 110v propane dryer in my house, and have never used the 220 outlet. So, tit-for-tat on that one.

    Your #1 fan here with questions! Filters should be changed on a month-by-month basis regardless of how they look, right? Growing up, I was told "only change them if you can't see through them, but I'm starting to think this is not true. There is probably no right answer for this - but what is an "ideal" temperature to have your thermostat set at? We do 76° during the day and 72° at night. I'm kinda leaning towards "go whatever you are comfortable - both on paper and in the home"

    Great video thanks for posting. My question is simple is the normal interlock plate that you can buy that prevents your generator circuit from back feeding good enough? What I don’t understand is the neutral from the pole is still connected even though the two 120 legs are not. Is there anyway for power to go up the neutral even though your main breaker’s off? I wish someone could explain that

    • @HuntsvilleUtilities
      @HuntsvilleUtilities 2 роки тому

      There are a lot of "it depends". House wiring... an experienced licensed electrician should take the time to review the wiring and make sure the ground and the neutral wires are not crossed. I'm not an electrician, but I could have one of our guys address your question more thoroughly if you would like better clarification. Installing the switch forces the generator to operate and breaks the connection with the outside service feeding your home. When the power is out sometimes people don't have a proper disconnect. In the most recent incident where a lineman was injured the switch was installed incorrectly, so all I can say is be careful and it doesn't hurt to have another pair of eyes review the wiring situation in your home.

    • @condor5635
      @condor5635 2 роки тому

      @@HuntsvilleUtilities - thanks for the reply and looking into it more. My ground and neutral bars are connected. All of my circuits come back like normal with grounds and neutrals connected to a common bus as aforementioned. Any interlock is just gonna disconnect the two 120 volt legs. They never disconnect the single neutral in almost all cases. If I have the interlock in place and the generator running with the 2 main power cut offs I believe I still measure amperage values on the neutral going back to the main line. That’s what I don’t quite understand.

    .... linemen should always be grounding the lines out when they clamp or work on any area of the line. Even if they test and see no power, ground anyway before touching incase someone backfeeds and theyll short out of their gen. Once work is done, take ground off line and go to substation to reset........

    • @HuntsvilleUtilities
      @HuntsvilleUtilities 2 роки тому

      You are correct and while they do ground, accidents can still happen due to human error. Most often the linemen are working on live wires. So, they are quite familiar with safety practices and they do everything they can to work safely every day. However, the locking switch... it eliminates the chance for human error. Let's not discuss one human error for another human error, please. Let's continue to spread awareness that can reduce the chance of any human errors.

Safe, very easy to use, super easy (5 min.) for the electric company to install. I have no ties to the company. I bought one and it's a great solution. Using it with my Generac standby genset. Actually, I have had a licensed professional electrician wire up my 240 line dedicated only to my generator in case of power outs. It has a 50 amp breaker at my main breaker box in the basement and a 30 amp breaker at the sub panel breaker box in my detached garage. I ALWAYS turn off the main breaker in My basement before starting my garage generator and plugging in my 10/4 cable into the generator 240 receptical. Now that I see this video, I am angry my electrician didn’t install a safety throw switch like you show. I want it done right, safe and legal. I am grateful you published this great video. Another great reason to do a back feed legally and safe is for home owner insurance, if you end up burning your house down and the insurance investigator finds you have a illegal back feed connection, it is a PERFECT excuse for your insurance company to deny your claim in case of a house fire. Doing a back feed illegally is a wonderful gift to your insurance company! They won’t pay you a penny! .

    I think a lot of people think turning the main breaker off and back feeding the generator through a dryer outlet or some other outlet or a breaker in the panel is ok as long as you turn off the main breaker and this is false. It is illegal to do this with out a lockout switch or lockout panel that locks out the possibility of having someone turn on the main by mistake or fail to turn it off. The word again is illegal and if there is a problem like your generator is running and you left the main on not only are you sending power out but if the power comes back on and your generator is running you will have a huge problem feeding your house from two different sources not on the same sine wave. I have heard of panels exploding from this. Oh and stop watching idiots giving free advice who are not licensed electricians.
